Als je om je heen kijkt, zie je hoe je omringd wordt door de puurste natuurlijke vormen. Ik vind het een enorme uitdaging, om de tere vormen van bijvoorbeeld een bloem in ijzer te vangen. Het is een poging om schoonheid te vereeuwigen. Nu ja, meer duurzaam te maken in een wrede wereld.
Het uitdrukken van de subtiele details vergt beheersing van het weerbarstige metaal, geduld en ook wel geluk. Je kunt er je hele hart en ziel in leggen.
Veel van het zwaardere smeedwerk is een temmen van het ijzer, een strijd. Hier echter is er meer sprake van het ijzer er toe over te halen, zich in de perfecte vorm te vlijen.
De roos is het symbool van de zuivere liefde, het is daarom misschien niet vreemd dat juist deze bloem zich zo wondermooi laat modelleren.

When you look around you, you will notice how you are surrounded by the purest natural shapes. I think it is a tremendous challenge to try to capture the tender shape of for instance a flower in iron. It is an attempt to immortalize beauty. Well, perhaps just to make beauty more enduring in a cruel world.
Expressing the subtlest details requires full control over the wilful metal, patience and also luck. One can put his whole heart and soul into it.
Much of the heavier forging work is concerned with taming the iron, a battle. Here however the aim is to coax the iron into taking the perfect shape.
A rose is the symbol of pure love, so perhaps it is not surprising that this flower in particular can be modelled so wonderfully beautiful.

In mijn meer ornamentele smeedwerk vind je zeker Perzische invloeden terug. De beheerste krullen zorgen voor geraffineerde vlakvullingen. Ik experimenteer verder graag met roosters die niet geheel in één vlak liggen. Dat kan tot verrassende effecten leiden. Ook loont het bijzonder, met verschillende staafdiameters en staafprofielen te spelen.	In my more ornamental forged work you definitely find traces of Persia. The restrained whorls make subtle and refined patterns. Furthermore I love to experiment with grids in which the bars are not all in the same single plane, often resulting in pleasing and pleasant surprises. Playing with various bar diameters and profiles also can be very profitable.

Het smeden van ijzer kent een lange traditie, ook in Europa. De Middeleeuwse smeden konden het toen nog primitieve metaal al nagenoeg naar hun hand zetten.
In de latere perioden werden allerhand stijlen ontwikkeld, van zuiver en ingetogen tot overdreven uitbundig en kitscherig versierd. Aan het begin van de 20e eeuw werden met Jugendstil en de daaraan verwante stijlen nieuwe wegen ingeslagen.
Ik heb die verschillende stijlen met het oog van zelf smedend smid bezien. Er valt immers veel inspiratie uit te putten. Elke stijl eist z'n eigen technieken, en die leer je alleen door zelf in die stijl te werken.
Het simpele deurtraliewerk hiernaast is hier een mooi voorbeeld van. Het is heel karakteristiek Hollands. Zwaar, hoekig en degelijk.

Forging iron can look back on a long tradition in Europe. Medieval blacksmiths already could largely impose their will on the then still primitive metal.
In later periods, all kinds of styles were developed, from pure and sober to exaggeratedly exuberant and kitschily garnished. At the beginning of the 20th century with the introduction of "arts and crafts" and Jugendstil and the kindred styles new avenues were explored.
I have looked at these various styles with the eye of a forging blacksmith. After all, a lot of inspiration may be drawn from them. Each style has its own techniques and you can only learn these by actually working in that style.
A nice example is the small and simple doorgrid shown here. It is very characteristicly Dutch. Heavy, angular and very sound.

Een goede smid heeft zijn ijzer lief. Ik houd er niet van, ijzer weg te gooien. Liever gebruik ik het om er een nieuw werkstukje van te maken. Het kandelaartje hiernaast is een voorbeeldje van zulk nuttig hergebruik.

A good smith loves his iron. I do not like to throw away any iron. It is much better to use it to make a new workpiece with it. The small candleholder shown here is an example of such advantageous reuse.
